Student Technology Proficiency Inventory

(STPI)

Implementation Plan for Urban Dreams Student Survey - 2002

The Student Technology Survey will be given to 24 teachers at 6 school sites (4 teachers at each school site) for distribution to two of their classes (an anticipated response of between 20 to 40 student surveys for each teacher).  Thus, we expect a total sample of approximately 720, and no fewer than, 480 students.  Teachers will be asked to try, as much as possible, to choose two periods where the class level of the students varies between the two periods (e.g., one may be a class composed largely of freshman versus another class of juniors and seniors).

For each school site, a list of the language arts and social studies teachers will be made.  Within each of the two departmental lists, the teacher will be sorted into those associated and not associated with the Urban Dreams Project.  From each of these 4 sublists (see below), one teacher from the site will be randomly selected.  If that teacher declines participation, an alternate teacher will be randomly selected from among the remaining teachers on that sublist at that site.  This process will be repeated for all 6 school sites.  The result will be the random selection of 6 teachers (one from each site) for each of the following 4 groups:

a)      LA UD teacher

b)      SS UD teacher

c)      LA non-UD teacher

d)      SS non-UD teacher.

In other words, there will be an equal number of SS and LA teachers and an equal number of UD and non-UD teachers.

Based on teachers following the instructions they are given, we anticipate an approximately equal number of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors to respond.  We are going to analyze responses as they come in to ensure an adequate distribution of responses by different grade levels.  Each teacher will be paid $100 for administering and mailing the surveys.
